Neil Rose is a sonic artist and academic who specialises in electroacoustic/acousmatic music, live performance, film, animation and design. He studied sonic arts at Middlesex University, is a key member of Plymouth’s premier experimental sound event Café Concrete, and lectures in sonic arts at Plymouth College of Art.
15 is a collaborative piece of work between two artists proud of their ambient experimental roots. Neil Rose created three original tracks inspired by a simple four sentence poem. These pieces were then reworked in a ‘Versus’ formula by Ben Solo (aka Ben Philcox, founder member of Prima Rosa and Dawn Chorus Ignites).
More about Neil...
Rose has undertaken many collaborative works with film and performance/live artists, most recently continuing his ongoing collaboration with performance artist Tom Marshman on his ‘Move Over Darling’ project that explores the local history and testimony of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual individuals in major cities around the country. In 2012 Rose recorded, edited, composed and mastered the soundtrack for film artist Erika Tan’s ‘Sensing Obscurity’, (filmed on location at Saltram House, Plymouth). Also in 2012, Neil worked with artist Beth Emily Richards to compose and produce the sound for ‘Rinkomania’, an Arts Council funded project.
Neil is also a successful recording artist, publishing on Prima Rosa records later this year. In 2009-2010 he published a solo album on Onec records and a publication/album as the outcome from a solo show held at Plymouth College of Art Gallery. Neil has also had work distributed internationally (and reviewed) by The Wire magazine. Rose has also previously collaborated with Tim Dickinson as ‘Got Any Rice’, is a member of improvisation trio ELM-K (published on Café Concrete) and for a time was a member of Croatian Goth/metal band ‘The Old Ones’.
A seasoned live performer, he has performed at all the major sonic arts festivals in Plymouth: Sonic Arts Expo (07), Peninsula Arts Contemporary music festival, as well as being commissioned by The University of Plymouth as part of their ‘Rescoring the Silent’ season (as a member of ELM-K), The ‘Vox Box’ project and PRS award winning project ‘The Fragmented Orchestra’ – realised by Jane Grant and John Matthias.
